The CASE 22 expedition (VII)
Time passed too rapidly! The expedition CASE 22 is already over but we would like to keep you updated about the last days on board of Vinson of Antarctica.
During these last days of the expedition, we spent some time in Krossfjorden and we were able to take our last samples from the about 1.5 billion years old rocks. We will use them for comparison with other samples we had taken in Liefdefjorden.
On our way back to Longyearbyen, we had a stopover in Pyramiden to learn more about the rocks, which contain the coal that was mined in that area.
In the evening of Thursday, the 12th of August, Vinson of Antarctica arrived in Longyearbyen, bringing about 100 samples and a group of very happy geologists.
Although we had only few days in our main target area, the north of Nordaustlandet, we can call this expedition as extremely successful. All visited areas and the samples taken there will give new and important information about the formation of Svalbard and its connection to other areas in the Arctic.
Arriving in Longyearbyen also meant to say Good Bye to Vinson of Antarctica and five wonderful people. Thank you Skip, Kenneth, Joana, José and Guillermo for the great time on board and making everything possible to reach our geoscientific goals and especially for not only being colleagues but also friends.
It was a great pleasure! Thank you!
